161 How I’m Simplifying My Blogging Business And Moving Forward

Simplicity – such a nice word. However, it's not a word that tends to come to mind when we think about blogging or business.

I've been doing this online business stuff for the last 6 years now and over the years, I've made things pretty complicated and now I'm going through the process of simplifying my blogging business.

Listen to This Episode

Here's what I mean:

  • I have 2 successful blogs that I'm working on (Interactive Biology and Become A Blogger).
  • For Become A Blogger, I've had 3 WordPress installations to run it (3 actual blogs). One for the blog, one for the membership site and one for my squeeze and sales pages.
  • I use InfusionSoft for my email marketing and eCommerce. This software is so complicated that I had to hire someone full time just to manage it when I first got it.

Those three things alone make life quite interesting.

How I’m Simplifying My Blogging Business And Moving Forward

So I've decided that in order to move forward efficiently and effectively, I HAVE TO make some serious changes to the way I've structured my business, and over the last few weeks, I've been on a journey to make that happen.

The journey is not over, but I've made some serious headway. Here are some of the things that I've done:

  • I've switched to WP Engine for my hosting. These guys specialize in WordPress hosting and make it so that I don't have to worry about a lot of the things I've been worrying about.
  • I've gone from 3 WordPress installations to 1
  • I'm switching from Infusionsoft to GetResponse. Ahhhhh, I can breathe again.
  • A bunch of other things

In addition to the changes I've made, I'm also changing what I focus on as I continue to grow Become A Blogger. What all am I changing?

Well, you've gotta listen to the episode to find out. I can't just give away EVERYTHING on here 😉

So have a listen, learn, enjoy, and TAKE ACTION.

How to Subscribe To The Show

  • Hi Leslie, great podcast. Thank you for sharing your new adventures. I especially like the way you are handling comments. I hate finding comments days after the fact because I didn’t log into an e-mail or some other account.
Does Get Response take the place of Aweber and InfusionSoft?
Thanks and have a super weekend!

    • Hi Vera, glad you enjoyed the podcast. For me, yes GetResponse is taking the place of Aweber and InfusionSoft. I won’t have all the features of InfusionSoft, but they have a ton of features that I don’t use. Also, I get confused when I log into InfusionSoft and I’m a relatively tech-savvy guy. So I’m going for simplicity.

You have a great weekend too 🙂

  • Libby Webb says:

Hi Leslie! I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast!! Left you a comment over on Soundcloud too and shared from there as well. Keep up the great work! As a newbie to blogging, I have lots to learn and appreciate your style and heart!

  • Anemi says:

As always , love the blog and your entusiasm, you are brilliant

  • Tamika says:

Great podcast as usual, Leslie! I appreciate how open you are. I’d love to know how utilizing Soundcloud is working for you and why you are using Soundcloud instead of Libsyn? Reason for my question is because I recently left Libsyn due to cost.

    • Hi Tamika, thanks for your feedback.

In terms of Soundcloud, I love it. I switched from Libsyn myself. There are some technical issues that you need to be aware of. They are still in beta test mode for podcasting so I haven’t fully recommended them here as yet, but that’s coming, so stay tuned 🙂

  • Tyrone Shum says:

    Hey Leslie,

Hope you are well. About the Membership plugin from WPMU, have you figured out how to connect it with Getresponse after a customer signs up?

    Many thanks

    • What Tyrone? You’re still alive? It’s been a while 🙂

Here’s a video showing how to connect the Membership plugin to other email services using Pings. I haven’t done it yet with GetResponse, but I’m working on the process this weekend.

    • Tyrone Shum says:

LOL. Yes it has been. It’s been hectic here with our new born, so I haven’t had much time to be online. Thanks for the video. Please do let me know when you get the ping working as I’m keen to do the same thing.

BTW, I’ve implemented your strategy and put everything into one blog and switched over to Getresponse as well. The only thing I’ve added is ZOHO CRM, which I’ve been using for a year now for our client database.

Thanks for the great podcast and everything that you share. Love your podcasts and keep them coming.

    • Interesting. I’m curious to see how you use ZOHO CRM. I signed up a while back but never really got into it. I’ve been looking for a good CRM though. Do you like it?

    • Tyrone says:

Love ZOHO CRM. As I have a video service business it helps me track all calls and actions I have with a client. I tested the integration with Getresponse and it works easily. Best CRM I’ve used so far.

  • This is a rather interesting episode Leslie. After listening to this podcast, I’m contemplating on making a few similar changes, for the purpose of “simplicity”. Thanks for the insights. Best of luck, as you move forward.

Just one question regarding the update of your sites. Are the BAB 2.0 & Blogging Business Simplified courses still available in thier current format? Are all the login pages for those of us who are members still the same? I can’t seem to log on and get 404 pages or can’t get off the home page of the blog. Thanks!

    • Yes they are Vanessa. I had some issues recently with my transfer to a new server and new system. Will be sending out an email soon with the new access info, so stay tuned.
