146 How To Network With People In Your Niche – A Candid Convo

I decided to do something a little different for this episode.

It's something a little sneaky 😉

Listen to This Episode

We all know that Networking is an important part of building any business, and yes – that also applies to an online business. So, I decided to give you a very practical example of Networking. How?

Inside This Episode

NetworkInYourNicheA few weeks ago I posted a question on Facebook. I asked something like: “Are you networking with people in your niche? If so, how's it going for you?”

One of the commenters (Brian Ramdhan) responded by saying that I should do teach how to do so on my blog.

That got me thinking, and I decided to do something a bit sneaky.

I've been wanting to do some serious networking for my biology blog. If I'm going to be leaving my job at the end of June, I really have to step up my game.

So I connected with Ryan Gray from Medical School HQ and asked him if he'd be up to having a convo and recording it for my podcast. He said yes. But then here's what I did . . .

We got on Skype and just started chatting. Of course, I hit record and he didn't know it. What followed was a genuine convo between two bloggers in complimentary niches. Some people like to call it – Networking. It doesn't get anymore practical than that.

At the beginning of the episode, I share some of my best networking tips and then jump over to the call.

This episode is a bit different, but I decided that different can be good. I guess you'll be the judge of that.

Let me know in the comments if you got value from this one.

Great stuff as usual. I like how you gave us homework. I think we should be given homework each week now as it gives us something to try and test.

    Thanks a lot man

  • Lee Anderson says:

Sometimes you have to sneaky to keep it real! Love it! I really got a lot out of this podcast. I’m going to check out IP,board and Paid Memberships Pro. I like how you are changing things up a bit.
    Thanks Leslie and Ryan.
    Continued success!

  • Awesome interview!! So glad I was able to play a part in making this connection. Got some great advice by listening to this conversation, both as a business owner, and as a science blogger (I too didn’t know Princeton has an affiliate program)
Sneaky there Lesley, and I loved Ryan’s answer to ‘you do know that I’m recording this right?’ – “Sure I didn’t know” HAHA love it!! great podcast and information as always

  • Jerry Dugan says:

Downloaded the transcripts to read later. Thanks for the goal plan on Lift, too.

  • Jared Easley says:

I’m a big fan of you & Ryan! Awesome!!

  • Nancy says:

Ouch! Please, Leslie – don’t do any other covert interviews, no matter how cool the
conversation is because you did it that way. I’m on your list because I have seen you as having integrity over time. However, I’m quite uncomfortable that you used this tactic and then told your list about it like you have something special because of such an action.

    • Thanks for your feedback. Keep in mind that he did agree to having our convo recorded. He just didn’t know which convo it would be, but he loved the idea.

    • Jo Anderson says:

I have to agree with Nancy. You are splitting hairs and justifying it
because it went well. Remember we all set examples, even sometimes for
ourselves. I hope when it’s my turn, you say “hey, you might want to
rethink that”. Don’t hold it against me, just give me some food for
thought. After all, we’re all in it together.

    • Thanks for your input Jo. I won’t be doing this again in the future.
