Inside this video, find out how you can easily install and use WordPress plugins for your new WordPress blog. Now, if you don’t know already, plugins is simply a fancy word for a small piece of software that you install into your wordpress blog, which then in turn provides you with some extra functionality.

I reviewed videos 7 and 10 and find them to be far better in quality than 90% of what’s out there… except that the audio had a considerable number of hiccups. Maybe it was an overloaded server/router/network… but I doubt it. If the hiccups are in the soundtracks, you shoule rerecord them as soon as possible.

Overall, Yaro, this is a very nice resource. Thanks!

Hi John

Thanks for your friendly and kind comments. I really appreciate it.

I’ve just watched the whole video and checked the sound and it seems to come out fine on my end.

What kind of hiccups did you encounter in particular?

Some typos:

In video 3 (or 4): it’s does not need the apostrophe.

In video 7: ads should be adds.

Why is does it seem impossible to find my wordpress.ORG API key…

I’ve been stuck on this one for 2 weeks and I have no idea why such an awesome tutorial would leave such crucial infromation out of the presentation….

I’ve looked everywhere for this answer! What the hell?

Hi there Deane

Thank you for your message! And sorry to hear that you are having some problems with Akismet and the API thing. I know what you feel like and it can get very frustrating at times.

I have good news for you!

I’ve found an instructional video that will solve the problem for you. Here it is:

http://www.tubetorial.com/stop-spam-with-akismet/

Simply follow the link, and then watch the video. It explains step-by-step how to get your own API key and then how to set it up in your blog.

Please let me know if you need any further help.

Kind regards

Gideon Shalwick

PS: Strictly speaking, you don’t actually need to have the Akismet plugin installed before you can launch your blog. All it means if you don’t have it installed, is that you will get some comment spam, which is not the end of the world. But of course, having the Akismet plugin installed and activated is recommended!

Deane, thanks for bringing this up
and Gideon, thanks for the video link, it’s very clear!

I’ve been trying to figure out for months how to get my API key and even sent my hosting company an email to ask for instructions, no dice. The video is very clear, but I still have a few questions.

I installed my blogs via my webhost with Fantastico and SimpleScripts, could that be the reason why I didn’t receive an API key?

A couple of months ago, I signed up for a free WordPress blog and did received an API key. This particular blog is for a community site, that I wasn’t necessarily going to maintain, hence the separate account.
So here is my second question: Can I use this API key for my other blogs or do I have to create another account?
Do I need a separate API key for each of my blogs?
I’m a little bit confused and don’t know if I should ask someone at WordPress or my host? Maybe you’ll know the answer …

Thanks to your clearly detailed step-by-step videos I finally have my blog installed. The plugin you domonstrate in video 7 is straight forward and I managed it, but others are more complicated and you say they are explained in more detail in the Premium videos. I didn’t find any other mention of them on your site. Is it possible to buy them?
Thanks
Gina

Hi Gina

Thanks for your welcome comment. I am glad you’re finding the videos helpful.

The Premium videos are on their way. We are working on the new site as we speak. Unfortunately I cant give you a date when the new site will be ready, but all I can say is that it will be soon.

What is the best way to upload the latest version of wordpress - going to wordpress to download and then use Filezilla or use the cpanel and fantastico as demonstrated for the initial download of wordpress in this video series?
Thank you!

Hi Terry

It really depends.

Are you talking about creating a new blog?

Or are you talking about upgrading the Wordpress version for your current blog?

I am talking about upgrading the Wordpress version for my current blog. I am also wondering how I can tell what version of Wordpress I am currently running.

Thank You,
Terry

Hi Terry

Upgrading your Wordpress version for your current blog is no trivial process. I would not recommend you do it yourself, unless you think you are very technically able.

My best advice would be to get a professional to help you with the upgrade process. Someone like http://www.blogtechguy.com/ perhaps.

If you still wanna do it yourself, you can get instructions for it at:

http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress

I’m just curious though…why would you want to upgrade? If you current version is working fine, I wouldn’t bother with it to be honest.

All the best!

These videos have been very helpful. One question though….I’ve downloaded and FTP’d “XML Sitemap” & “Google Related Posts”. Neither of which has shown up on my plug-in page. I had no problem with 3 other plug-ins. Any advice?

wow… very clear and useful info - where were you guys when i was just learning this stuff…

what tools are you using to make these videos? especially the marketing one at http://becomeablogger.com/roadmap/ - now that was cool - do you train how to do that?

love to do a review on my blog some day of your ebook.

Hi Paul

Thanks for your very kind comments!

I do teach some video stuff, but it’s for beginners. The video on http://becomeablogger.com/roadmap/ is a bit more advanced, but I am planning on putting together a program for that too.

But if you’re just starting out, you can go to:

Hi Mike

About your issues with “XML Sitemap” & “Google Related Posts”, it might be that you FTP’d the inappropriate folders or files.

Just make sure you check the installation instructions for those plugins. The problem is likely to have something to do with uploading the wrong file structure. (Sometimes you’re only required to upload the .php file, and not the whole folder - so just check that too.)

Hope this helps!

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hi Gwen

It could be a number of different things:

1. You’re theme could be clashing with the plugins, so maybe try a different theme to test this theory?

2. You may have uploaded the wrong plugin file or folder. Read the pluging installation instructions carefully to find out exactly which file or folder to upload, and where you should upload it to.

3. It could be that that your version of WordPress does not support those plugins currently. All the videos and plugins we recommend are tested for WordPress version 2.6.3. So, if you’re maybe on a different version, like 2.7 for example, this could also cause a problem.

Have you “Google’d” your problem yet? And have you found anyone else with the same problem?

Kind regards

WOW, Gideon! Not sure what I’d do without your AWESOME videos!!!

I’d heard that while Wordpress is the best tool for creating a professional blog, it can also be daunting and difficult to master… with your information and great videos, it’s been a breeze…

Still a long way to go, but so far, everything you have explained I have followed with no problems or glitches at all!

THANK YOU!!!

Hey Anika

Thanks!

I’m currently using the Thesis Theme for this blog. But I’ve modified it a bit to suit my needs. If you know a little bit about css programming, you can actually customize the Thesis theme quite a bit.

Hey Ronnie

Thanks!

The other videos inside Become A Blogger Premium are of the same caliber of this one, and some have even more detail inside of them.

There are mainly two types of videos inside the Premium area:

1. Strategy videos telling you about the “what” and “why”

2. And then the practical videos showing you the “how” (the above video is one of these)

That way we make sure that you not only understand why you need to do certain things, but also show you exactly how to do them.

All the best!

hi~ I’m new to your blog and find this video useful. However, I had problem finding the plug-in folder in my blog. Is it because I’m not self hosted?
thanks.
