Video 5 - How To Upload Files To Your Web Host Using FTP

by Gideon Shalwick on January 23, 2008 · 36 comments

In this video, you’ll discover how to upload files to your own website or blog using FTP. Don”t worry, FTP only stands for “File Transfer Protocol”, and it’s simply a fancy way of talking about the way you can get your files onto your web host.

Enjoy!

Hey Sarv007

Sorry I’m a bit late. We only recommend Hostgator at this stage. It just makes things easier for the rest of the videos and to keep things consistent.

There are other services that you can use, but as far as I know, most of them will be charging in US dollars only.

You could try to find someone in India who could help you out, but then some of the later videos may not make sense to you.

Hi Gideon!

Quick question: If I buy a new domain url and add it as a subdomain, can I move or copy the WP files/folders I created under the main domain to the subdomain simply by dragging or copying the folders in the cPanel directory? So that my subdomain url now features my blog vs. doing a redirect?

Thanks for any help! :)

Hello Gideon,
I am one of Yaro’s Mastermind students and I am going through the “Become a Blogger” video series and I got to the point of choosing a theme for my wordpress blog site and since I have a MacBook, I got stopped at the point of uploading the file. I was able to figure out most of it but my file didn’t have that “zipped” look to it and a lot of the clicking you did, I didn’t have to do to get as far as I got but I am stuck now. Do you have anything in print possibly that would direct someone with a Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sharon

Hi Kali (Lilla)

I think you will have to do a new install from scratch. When you do the one-click install via Fantastico, it automatically creates all the right databases on your server and installs the Wordpress software.

So, if you just copy and paste the folders, it will NOT work.

I think you’re best bet is to install Wordpress on the subdomain, and then add your content afterwards.

Of course this is easier if you haven’t got any content yet :)

Hi Sharon

I wish I could help better…I’m overseas at the moment and away from my Mac.

Could you perhaps be a bit more specific with the issue that you’re having? Perhaps I could still help…

Hello;

Thank you for clear understanding up to this point, but I got lost where you drag the “Test”? file into the box on the right side. Your mouse was too quick to follow, and I couldn’t read the files on the right side. I think you clicked “access logs”? on the right, then another file in same box? So I don’t know where to place the “Test” file which is transferred from the left box to the box on the right side. May I access a video which would show this more clearly? I will be happy to pay for it.

I’ll be honest with you: I hate video tutorials. Why not have CLEAR screen shots with text? It would be so much easier.

Thank you for a response.

Re: Filezilla video FTP

Sorry, but I mistyped my e-address in my previous comment on transferring the “Test”? file to the box on the right side. I couldn’t read the file names and the mouse was too quick to follow. I don’t know where to place the file I’m supposed to drag into the box on the right side.

Would really appreciate help here. Barring that, I’ll simply hire someone to do it.

Thanks for any feedback.

Hi Charles

Sorry to have confused you with this video.

This video is only for instructional purposes and serves as an example of how to use the FTP program.

So, for this video, you don’t actually have to click and drag anything over to your server. Those actions are simply there to illustrate how to use the program.

In later videos, you’ll be shown more specifically what to copy over to your server, and also how to do it.

The important thing for this video, is that you install the FTP software, and get an understanding of how to use it.

We are planning to make all the videos available in text format as well in the near future. So that should make it easier for you then.

Best regards

Hi Gideon,
I just got a notice that there was a new comment on your site and it was the gentleman that hates video tutorials. I wanted to say why I think video tutorials are so wonderful. They have helped me learn faster than any other method because I can “pause” them and work on what they tell me to do, and then start again. Of course I have a laptop that I am getting the instructions on while doing the actual work on my main computer. Thanks again Gideon for all you do for all of us. Sharon Beck

Thanks for the support Sharon!

Yeah, I guess not all of us learn best with video instruction. That’s what makes the world so interesting :)
Charles has a good point though…it would be great to get the text up for the videos in case people want to print it out and follow it that way.

Hi Gideon,
Like Sharon I’m using a MacBook and had to download the OS X version of FileZilla instead of the PC version. Like Sharon, I found that many of the steps required in the PC version were not required for the Mac version (Screens and set-up wizards didn’t appear, and the down-arrow on the main FileZilla page (upper left) never existed in the Mac version of the screen.) This is my second attempt at implementing Videos #4 & #5 and I am not getting the desired results even though I have carefully documented each step I have taken (I stop the video and incrementally try to implement each step, like Sharon and then write down what I did). But when things that I never get, like a down-arrow, never appear I’m at a loss for what to do next. Any suggestions? Are you back with your Mac yet? Except for these few differences between Macs and PCs, all the videos have seemed to me to be excellent! -Jim

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hi Jim

I feel your pain.

All the videos were created with PC users in mind, since that is by far the operating system used by most of our members. In saying that though, the differences are not THAT much between the two operating systems.

I think, if this is really holding you back, you need to find someone experienced enough with the Mac operating system to help you out so that you can get over this initial hump. If you want to run successful blog, it really pays to get someone else to quickly solve these technical issues for you if you can’t figure them out yourself quickly.

About the down arrow for the Filezilla program, I’m not sure why this is holding you back. If you click on the little computer icon in the same position (top left), it should open up a small window for connection to your server. Just select your domain name that you set up, and then click on the “Connect” button. So, you don’t actually need the drop-down arrow. Give this a go, and see what happens.

In general, if you don’t want to pay someone else to help you with all this, just experiment a little, and ask yourself, what is the worst that could happen? If it means you’ll lose all your current work up to this point, and it’s not that much work, then you really have nothing to lose.

The more you experiment, the more you will learn.

All the best!

how do i get rid of wordpress at the end of my address and have just my domian up their when i search? one more thing any new blog is a tutorial right and if im right why dont i see peramlinks and plugins on my dashboard

[Reply]

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hey demone

It sounds like you are running a blog from WordPress.COM.

We teach people how to set up blogs using WordPress.ORG.

There is a BIG difference between the two types of blogs - make sure you watch video #1 again to find out the difference.

But basically, if you install a new blog using the software from WordPress.ORG, using the method that we teach inside these 10 videos, you should be able to have a domain name of your choice, without the “wordpress” in it.

As to your second question, I not sure I understand. Could you please explain clearly what you mean?

I’m just beginning to RESEARCH a blogging career. I tried to do some PROOFREADING with Elance.com through another link, but really got nowhere because I did not find any JOBS to bid on. When I bid on a job, it was UNAVAILABLE.

I need to get some CASH coming into my coffers before I can really go forward with the blogging aspect. Is there any PROOFREADING assistance available?

After I get going I would be able to continue my blogging career. If I could make some money without hosting and such I could use anything AI made to pay for my other needs.

Your site seems to consider first timers like myself. Any OTHER help is APPRECIATED!

Thanks, in advance,

Dan

Hello,

I am trying to set up my Filezilla now - but there is no IP. Address in my welcome letter from my host. What do I use instead in the host section of the Filezilla setup please?

Thank You

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hey SonDon

Ok, did you use Hostgator for your host/server? If you did, they will have sent you an email with all those details.

Otherwise, you can just use http://ftp.YourDomainName.com where YourDomainName is the domain name of your blog/website.

That should do the trick!

Thanks,

Hey Frank

Thanks for the compliment!

I used Screenflow for the recordings (on Mac) and also a little bit of Live Font. If you’re on PC, you can just use Camtasia.

Hello,

I worked on the free video menu for about 6 hours today. I ran into trouble with setting up the ftp because I have a MAC and filezilla did not work on my computer. When I finally found the another program that would work, the videos on your site no longer would play. I literally spent 3 hours trying to figure out how to get them to play again. I followed all the steps to getting the video to play on your site with no luck.

Please help as I am anxious to get my site up and running. Do you have a written version that I can download somewhere?

Thanks,
Kimann

gideon,

i had the same problem as KJ and learned it’s because I have Mac OS 10.4 rather than 10.5 which FileZilla requires. Is there anything you know of to remedy this matter outside of an operating system upgrade? FileZilla didn’t seem to offer older releases of their software.

Best regards,
Kevin

I was so excited to view your videos and to leave some amazing feedback but unfortunately I did not know how to find the Wordpress hosting number. I was told that Wordpress.com do not host and in order to have a Wordpress blog designed with my theme I must have a host. So I am stuck. :( Guess I am sticking with blogger. At least they do not charge to customize.

Did you watch all of the 10 videos? They show you exactly what you need to do to set up your own self hosted WordPress.ORG (not .COM) blog using Hostgator.
