Thank you so very much for your highly informative videos. Your content and presentations are excellent. I have a number of blogs - all of them on external providers, and I did not know HOW to install it for my website - until now. Thank you again.

Hi Folks,
Got as far as installing wordpress with one click using Blue Host.
It had to put it in a directory called blog.
I was given a URL http://infoproducts4u.com/blog.
But unfortunately neither the website or the blog now come up on the browser, the search just keeps timing out.
Any thoughts.
The videos are a great idea!

Jim

Gideon Shalwick September 9, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Hi Jim

I’m not quite sure what could be the problem. Have you contacted the people at Blue Host yet? Quite often they provide solutions.

We recommend Hostgator inside our videos, and have decided to only help with issues related to that. It just keeps things simpler for everyone.

But I think your best option is to contact Blue Host and see if they can help you out. It’s likely to be a server issue.

Sorry I can’t help more…

Thanks so much for making these videos, because they are a big help for people who are setting up a website/blog for the first time.

Mario September 22, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Hi Gideon,

I like the vids. Using CPanel the same way you do it produces just a page that tells me that a fatal error occured. Alas, not that easy. Now I have to dive into the deep and trying to do it manual. The 5 minutes installation version will become a five hour one, I guess.

However, keep up the good work.

All the best,
Mario

Hi Mario

Sounds like you’re having some problems.

I haven’t seen your problem before, so I’m not sure I can help you.

Have you talked to the guys at http://www.wordpress.org yet?

Austin October 8, 2008 at 5:24 am

Your tutorial is very helpful and informative. As I was listening to it I, noticed that if someone(a newbie) made a mistake like installing word press in the wrong directory, they may not know what to do next. whether to delete and start afresh or continue. I think a little explanation may come handy. By and large it is really a wonderful tutorial.

Thanks

Gideon Shalwick October 21, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Hi Austin

Thanks for the feedback!

I think if someone installs Wordpress in the wrong directory, it might pay to get a technical person to help you out to fix it up.

Otherwise, the safest option is to simply start from scratch again and make sure you install it in the correct directory.

Thanks again for the cool comment!

I really love your tutorials but I have come upon a problem.
Rather than using Host Gator, I used Bluehost and everything was okay, until…
After successfully uploading the wordpress folder content onto the public_html folder in the server, I went to the address you told me to “[yourdomainname].com/wp-admin/install.php”. But it gave me a 403 forbidden error!
So now i can’t access my own site!!
Can you please help me and explain what I should do? Thank you so much.
ASAP please.

Joo

Gideon Shalwick November 10, 2008 at 11:51 am

Hi Joo

This is a tricky one, because we don’t support hosting providers other than Hostgator. It would just make things way too complicated for everyone involved if we were to support all hosting providers.

There could be so many things that could have gone wrong if you used another hosting provider. While Bluuehost seems to have a great reputation, I’m not sure how exactly they deal with their file structure, the cpanel and database creation. So that means that there are potentially many different places where you could have gone wrong.

You have at least two options:

1. Start from scratch, but this time use Hostgator. If you take this option, any future videos that covers anything to do with Hostgator will make a lot more sense to you.

2. Make sure that you’ve actually used the correct database name and username when you modify the wp-config.php file. It’s likely that Bluehost uses a different format for this. Perhaps you could contact them to confirm that the format you’re using is correct.

2. Get some technical help. A person we gladly recommend is Joel from http://www.blogtechguy.com. He’ll be able to help you out really quickly too.

Hope that helps, and all the best!

Gideon Shalwick

Joo November 10, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Hi Gideon,

Just want to let you know that the problem described above was solved by my hosting provider. In fact it had nothing to do with Wordpress but with restricted rights in some directories of the server. It was very fast fixed and now I am enjoying Wordpress.

Your video’s were very helpful to make a kickstart. Thank you!

Mario

hi.. you helpeed me the other day I am setting up my blog..love doing it its great! I enjoy your products so much, however when watching the videos why can we not use the forward and backward arrows? I need to use them all of the time.. in fact I accidentally binked of the video in the middle of wathcing it and had to watch the whole thing again, there fore the 5 minute process took an hour.

Just a heads up… keep a truck’n though!

Anita

Gideon Shalwick November 23, 2008 at 2:33 pm

Hi Anita

You can easily scroll through the video by clicking and dragging on the little round dot in the player bar at the bottom of the video.

Just wait for the whole video to download so that you can scroll through the whole of the video ok?

Give that a go…

Catherine December 9, 2008 at 10:11 am

Hi Gideon, these are really quality videos and I appreciate that they are geared to beginners. Technical terms usually gets me confused and frustrated. I love the fact that I can pause the video and actually do what you just demonstrated on it and then click play again when I’m ready for the next step.

However, I went back to the videos two days ago and one or two of them were slow to stream completely. All the videos were fine last week when I watched them for the first time. I have the latest flash player and cable access, so I’m wondering whether it might be a technical issue on your end.

Gideon Shalwick December 9, 2008 at 12:54 pm

Hi Cathrine

Thanks for your comment…

I think it could have something to do with the video sharing service we are using.

But I’ve found a way to fix it…

Do the following:

1. Clean our your internet cache (see instructions here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/using/howto/customizing/clearcache.mspx)
2. Then hit refresh on the page where you were watching the video
3. Then try to watch the video again

This should fix the problem in most cases.

It may also be a good idea to press play to start the video, and then press the pause button a few seconds later. Then wait until the whole video has downloaded before you hit the play button again.

Let me know if you have any more problems ok?

Gideon, there is a problem with this video. I have watched it before without a problem. Now there are streaming problems with it on IE, Firefox and Chrome. I have been unable to watch this video for more than 8 minutes over more than a dozen tries. Too bad, because it’s such an important video in the series.

Overall, the series is outstanding. Great job.

My bad. I should have said I’ve done all the above. I have done all the above with IE, and Firefox, and Chrome. I figure with all three having the same problems, it might be something outside of my system. It appears that only this episode is so bad, at times, I cannot even connect, or get past a few seconds before it hangs.

Alex December 13, 2008 at 7:28 am

First, there appears to be two versions of video #4. One that does it the long way, and a second one, using the “1 click” method. Maybe they could be renamed 4a and 4b.
Second, how about a video that shows the steps for updating an existing wordpress blog. If not a video, at least some step by step instructions. I currently have ver. 2.3.3. If I update through cpanel, it will take me to 2.7, and I don’t want to do that at this time. Some help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hi Alex

Please DO NOT install Wordpress version 2.7. There’s a very good reason for this. If you’re a member (I know you are a member), you can see why here:

http://becomeablogger.com/premium/help/#2

About upgrading Wordpress - yes we will cover that in later videos.

And finally, you’re only supposed to have seen the 5 minute install video - i will update the one on this blog…

Thanks!

Hello,I have been very impressed and appreciative of your how to blog support videos and have been following them to form my very own blog. They are very helpful and provide a great array of detail,on the other hand I can not use the exact same guidelines because I have a mac laptop.Furthermore, I have gottten stuck on video 4(instaling the wordpress).I have linked my domain name and webhost and now when I attempt to log into my domain name/cpanel I am not prompted with the login page as directed.I do not understand this and I am very excited and ready to finish the how to videos and complete my blog as soon as possible.Hopefully there will be a resolution to this and someone could help me drift back upon the right track!Thank you so much for the information so far and I hope to hear from someone soon.

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hi Gabriel

It could be that your domain name details have not had enough time to propagate through the internet just yet. It normally takes around 24 to 48 hrs for that to happen. If this is the cause, just wait a couple of days before you try it out again.

But what actually happens when you type in YourDomainName.com/cpanel?

What do you actually see?

Is there a special error message that you got?

The more information you provide, the better I can help.

Ok, it sounds like there is something wrong then. I think you’re best bet would be to contact Hostgator at http://www.hostgator.com.

They have a 24-7 help desk where you can either call them, or just use their easy chat feature.

They will most likely be able to help you out with this issue as it sounds like it might have something to do with your server.

Oops just saw you mentioned not to use WP 2.7 again - any other reason apart from that it may be more confusing since your vid is 2.6. etc?

I am using 2.7 and on godaddy so let’s see if it works as well or will move to hostgator.

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hi Tia

There are a couple of other reasons…

1. New versions have bugs, so if you wait a couple of months you can get a stable version after the WordPress community has tested it. This is especially true for each major new release like version 2.7.

2. Plug-ins for WordPress are usually created by one person or a small group of programmers. When there is an upgrade to WordPress, not all plug-ins work and it’s up to the creator/support team to update the plug-in. This can happen quickly, or very slowly or not at all.

And of course, the rest of the videos use version 2.6.3 - at a later stage, I will show people how to safely upgrade to a later version.

All the best!

Johnny January 31, 2009 at 4:16 pm

I don’t understand why you would use the “5 minute” install when you could have used Fantastico and installed it with just a few clicks.

Thanks,
Johnny

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hey Johnny

Believe me, I sure would have preferred teaching the Fantastico method. And in fact, I used to teach that method because it’s so much easier than the 5 min install process.

But one of the main reasons why we decided to teach the 5 min install method is because with Fantastico, you do not get a choice with which version of WordPress to install.

So, for example, if you’re installing a new blog, and you don’t want to install the latest version of WP due to possible bugs or other issues (which is often the case for new WP versions), Fantastico won’t work for you.

We always recommend waiting a few months before upgrading to a new version for WP in any case.

Later on, inside our Premium area, we teach members how to upgrade to a later (and safe) version of WordPress.

All the best!

The video is great… really clear instructions…

I’ve been interrupted several times and come back and had to start from the beginning. It would be nice if it were possible to drag the bar along to the point that we want to watch from.

Hello Gideon!
Because I was not able to get the down arrow from video #5 to appear I went back and went through this video (#4) again thinking maybe I had done something wrong here (I have a MAC so the directions are not word for word compatible). I even tried to download wordpress a second time - and this is what you need to know - version 2.6.3 is no longer available in the wordpress archive (at least it was not on 3-11-09) There does exist a version titled 2.6-beta3. I don’t know if it is in fact the very same version, just under another name, or not. Instead of trying the beta version I went back to my original download of 2.6.3. Today I’m going to try Video #5 again and see if I can come up with an arrow. You may need this info for your next class. Jim

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hi Jim

You are looking in the wrong place for the 2.6.3 version. You’ve scrolled down too far on the page. Just have a look again. It is DEFINITELY still there -I just checked.

Gideon Shalwick

Jim Trice March 12, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Gideon!
Let me try to be more succinct in presenting the problem (as I understand it).

I’m in the exact opposite situation from what I was in taking the classes in video at the college. Then, the classes were taught using a Mac, and I had a PC; now, this internet class is taught using PCs and I have a Mac. What I understand we’re trying to do is use FileZilla FTP to transport a wordpress file/program from the desktop of my Mac to a web site run by Hostgator. Supposedly, I have already set up Hostgator with a paid-for web site; set up Wordpress with my account information; and all I have to do is use an already set up FileZilla to transport the Wordpress from my desk top to the Hostgator server.

Where I think the problem arose is that the directions for the set-up tasks were stated in PC terms, resulting in downloads for PC with displays made for PC. But, like Sharon, I had to download the Mac versions of the programs which resulted in slightly different screen displays. The problem seems to have arisen from the fact that subsequent PC instructions called for using some of the differences in the screen displays. (An example is where a down-arrow exists on the PC screen that doesn’t exist on the Mac screen - yet the subsequent instructions call for using the down-arrow to 1) ensure that a change went through and was made, and 2) for later calling up a program.)

While I’m sure that anything that can be done on the PC can also be done on the Mac, but using other key strokes, I have no prevous understanding, experience with, or familiarity with the terminology used by the Wordpress, FileZilla FTP, or Hostgator programs. In addition I did not grow up with computers so I’m experiencing everything with little to no previous knowledge. Thus, when I search the tool bars for alternative ways of accomplishing what I think it is we’re trying to do, and the tool bars don’t incorporate the exact same terminology employed by the video instructions, and I don’t understand the terminology I find on the tool bars: I can’t work my way around the problem. So I am stuck with no way to advance towards my goal.

You may laugh at this, but when your assistant suggested I go to a technical section of the Premium blog, I couldn’t find it, or even get my password changed to find it. In fact, I just yesterday discovered that the bottom of the Become A Blogger videos 1 - 10 page is in fact a comments page in a blog. You may find this humorous too, I was an electro/mechanical designer for years with patented inventions - so I thought of myself as not being technically challenged! I guess the truth can hurt!

But bottom line, I want to understand the technology, not just pay someone else to set it up for me. Do you have any recommendations as to how I might work my way around these problems? thanks -Jim Trice

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hi Jim

I wrote a response to your previous comment that applies to your above comment as well.

You can read the reply here (just scroll down to the bottom of the page):

http://www.becomeablogger.com/blog/video-5-how-to-upload-files-to-your-web-host-using-ftp/#respond

All I can say is that you need to experiment a little more with these things. I know this may sound a bit silly, especially after everything you’ve tried already, but sometimes this is the best and only way to learn if you want to do it all yourself. Unless of course you can get someone to sit next to you and show you step by step where to click for everything all the time. Obviously I cannot provide this kind of service since I’m on the other side of the world :)
Perhaps you know someone local to you who could go through the course with you? They may be able to help you out whenever you get stuck like this.

Sorry I can’t help any more than this. But I think I’ve done everything I can, except maybe fly over to your house and help you out in person :)
All the best Jim, and don’t give up ok? It will all come together fantastically very soon for you. And these issues will seem really small once you get your blog going and running successfully.

All the best!

You may have mentioned it somewhere but I cld have missed it. I like my site but really want 2 cols and can’t find anything I’d like as much with pre-existing 2 cols (if you know of any good templates that look a bit like rev code red but have 2 cols, please do let me know, thanks!)

Keep up the good work xx Tia

Hey Tia

Sure :)

You may have a few options, depending on the theme that you are using:

1. You may be able to select a 3 column setting inside the admin area of your blog. This will come with your theme. If your theme does not have this option, you can try one of the following two options…

2. Find a theme that has 3 columns. You can either look for free ones, or purchase a new theme from a place like http://www.woothemes.com (there are many others around as well)

3. Or, if you can’t find anything else you like, you can enlist the services of a technical person to modify your current theme, or do a totally new design for your. Someone like http://www.uniqueblogdesigns.com/ could help out with this.

All the best!

Hi,

Two questions:

1) If you want to install more than one WordPress blog on a single HostGator account, should you put the first one in the root directory? (In other words, do you get a “new” root directory for each domain name or only one per HostGator account?)

2) Is it safe yet to use WordPress 2.7 or should I stick to 2.6.3?

Thanks!
Johnny

Hey Johnny

Two answers :) :

1. Install your first blog inside the root directory (public_html). And for the other blogs, use the following instructions:

******Instructions Start******

Step 1: Create A New Domain Name

Create a new domain at namecheap.com.

Step 2: Set Up Your Domain Name Servers

You then need to get the nameservers of your new
domain at namecheap to point to your original
hostgator account. You can do this by logging into
namecheap.com, clicking on your new domain and
then, on the left hand side in the menu
navigation, it says ‘Transfer DNS to Webhost’.
Click on that!

It will then bring up a table with some fields and
you need to fill in the top 2 with the nameservers
sent to you by hostgator when you first signed up
with them. It would have arrived in the welcome
email with your account details. It will look
something like this:

ns867.hostgator.com
ns868.hostgator.com

Add these details to the top two spaces and click
on “save details”.

Step 3: Add Your New Domain Name To Hostgator

Then log in to your cpanel of the first domain you
have ie. myfirstdomain.com/cpanel.

Scroll down to the domains section, and click on
“Add On Domains”. Then type in your new domain
name in the “New Domain Name” field. It should be
in the form YourNewDomainName.com.

Then, when you click on on any of the other
fields, they should get automatically filled out
for you. Just keep those entries as they are and
then create a new password.

Once you’re done, click on the “Add Domain”
button.

And that’s it for adding a new domain name to your
Hostgator account.

(Don’t forget that after you’ve purchased a domain
name it takes a little while to propagate so take
this into account if things aren’t showing up. If
you put your new url/domain into your internet
browswer address bar and it brings up a page with
some folders on it - then that’s a sign that
you’re good to go!)

Then, if you want to install a new WordPress blog
on the new domain, you will need to upload all the
files to the new domain folder that was created by
Hostgotar. When you use your FTP program, you will
find it under public_html/YourNewDomainName.

Everything else should be the same for installing
your a WordPress blog onto the new domain name.

******Instructions End******

2. Version 2.7 now appears safe yes, but our videos are still mainly for version 2.6.3. But if you can handle the differences between the versions quite easily, you should be fine :)

These videos are exactly what is so helpful to a beginner.
They just take me by the hand and and show me how to get
where I want to go.
Most remarkable of all, there is no technobabble. Even a html illiterate
like me could understand and follow what to do “almost” blindfolded.
What a relief to have found these instructions.
Thanks and thanks again.

P.S. A slightly naive question (hopefully):
I travel a fair bit. Do I have to install all this software on my laptop as well?

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hey Klaus

Thanks for your very nice words! Much appreciated!

To answer your question…

If you’re referring to the WordPress software, you don’t actually need to install it on your computer anywhere - you download the files to your computer yes, but then you upload them again to your own server, and then you install the WordPress software on your server. So that means you can be anywhere in the world, and access your WordPress Admin area from any computer with an internet connection.

All the best!

Hi Gideon,

Thanks for the helpful information and I am happy to know
that I can just wander to an Internet Cafe with little more
than my portable hard drive a usual.

Yeah it’s really great nowadays…

All you need is a laptop and an internet connection, and you can run your online business from pretty much anywhere in the world!

It’s great!
