Thanks for the video.
That’s easy to understand even for a beginner like me. :)
I have a question.
Does it make any difference between registering a domain name at the site you recommend or at any other site offering the same service?
The thing is, to me it’s a lot easier to do that in Japanese at Japanese site because I have to read & understand terms & agreements beforehand.
To read them in English is a great task compared to my mother language, and I’d like to do that in Japanese as long as there makes no difference in SEO or page rank or whatever possibly in the future just because of my choosing Japanese site at this moment.

Same concern is also for hosting server.
What if I chose the one offered in Japan? My blog will be in English and directed for non-Japanese readers, but for the same reason as above, it’d be much easier for me to choose the service in Japanese than in English because I’m so scared of agreement (as it’s always threatening me with explaining the least happening worst case). But if this one wrong choice makes me suffer from SEO or anything in the future, I should take good enough time to tackle English site.

Sorry for long writing, hope you get what I mean and could answer this…

Hi Kirin

Thanks for your comments and questions. Here are some replies:

It’s not essential that you use the same domain name and hosting service that we recommend. You’re free to use whatever service that you feel most comfortable with.

However, please note that we wont be able to give you any support for questions related to the services other than the ones we recommend.

All our videos and future tutorials assumes that you will have used the services that we recommend. So, in that sense, it would definitely make it easier to follow the videos if you use the services we recommend.

But if you think that you’ll be able to live with the differences between the services that you would like to use, and the services we recommend, then you should be just fine.

All the best!

Hi Gideon,

Thanks for your prompt & kind advice!
OK, I understand what you say.

I’d be willing to check out the rest of the videos based on the service you recommended this time.

Thank you.

that service costs money now…(wordtracker)

Gideon Shalwick August 31, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Hi Chris

You are correct, the Wordtracker service does cost money.

But their free keyword tool does not cost a cent. Here’s the link to the free keyword tool:

Enjoy!

Hi Gideon! :)
I found a .com domain name that I REALLY like but it’s been taken. I want to use the plural version of it which IS available. The singular domain that is taken has just been parked for 2 years - no website on it except for parked page. What if any, are the repercussions of my using the plural version of a taken domain name? Thanks much!

p.s. I was watching some other videos of yours about making videos, but I’ve seemed to have lost the link. Can you forward me the url?

Gideon Shalwick September 15, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Hi Lilla

Using the plural of another domain name could hold both advantages and drawbacks:

Advantages:

If someone wants to visit the other site and accidentally types in the plural instead of the singular form, they would automatically visit your site. That is, you could get some extra traffic as a result.

Disadvantages:

Our own target marketing could type in the singular form of your domain name. In which case they would go to the wrong website. This could of course be confusing for them, and could cause the other website to get the traffic you’re supposed to be getting.

So, they kinda cancel each other out. I cant see anything wrong with getting the plural of the other domain name.

Talk soon!

Hi Irene

Thanks for your nice feedback :)
You may need a faster connection to be able to stream the videos faster.

Have you tried it on a different computer with a better internet plan?

Quick note - a domain name can’t contain underscores by rule. Only hyphens are permitted.

I think I’d like to challenge the fact that you don’t recommend hyphens in a domain name. Sometimes, hyphens make the domain more readable. There have been many occasions where this-is-my-blog.com has caught my attention more than thisismyblog.com (these are examples of course and may or may not exist). Even Yaro’s blog’s domain name has a hyphen.

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Good point Aditya

You are free to use whatever you want for your domain name. The things inside the video are only suggestions for what we think is best and it’s certainly not the only way of doing things.

Whatever works for you really :)

Great video(s) but they keep on playing and stopping frequently. Can’t get to follow the lessons clearly. Tried the trouble shootings suggestions but nothing worked.

Have you tried viewing them on a different computer yet?

It could also be your internet connection. You’ll need a good broadband connection to watch the videos easily.

Just a few questions:

What are the differences between the options: personal, business use, speculation, client, other?

Can you not simply purchase a domain name outright or do you have to repurchase every year?

Is there a reason you do not recommend other services such as godaddy or others? I mean, what is the essential difference or the reason for your recommendation?

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hey Lucas

Thanks for your questions…

About the options, I don’t think it matters too much which one you choose. As far as I can tell, NameCheap only uses that to collect some statistics about their users. So, no big deal.

You normally pay for a domain name per year. I have not come across the option of simply paying once, but there may be services like that. Not sure.

We recommend NameCheap because they are reliable and easy to use. We try to stay away from GoDaddy as much as we can because of some horror stories we’ve heard from our other internet marketing friends. Also GoDaddy likes slapping on all kinds of extra offers and upsells that you don’t need and we’ve found that it just confuses a lot of people.

I ONLY use NameCheap for all my domain names, and I’ve done so now for a number of years and have not had any problems with them at all.

All the best!

Hi Gideon and Yaro - the wanderer has returned! Two to three months ago I happened upon your “becomeablogger.com” site. At that time I only used the internet to answer emails and read about world news. Internet marketing, blogging, affiliate marketing, keywords etc were all completely new to me, I had never heard of them before. I downloaded your Roadmap to become a Blogger and also your Blog Profits Blueprint to see if I could work out what to do. I felt a little daunted by the size of the printouts and put them to one side and looked on the internet to try and learn a little more about internet marketing, blogging etc. Wow, I have learned a huge amount from that first afternoon but as you say on pages 50 & 51 of Blog Profits Blueprint you can definately suffer from “information overload” and I was definately left confused and paralyzed and sitting there staring at the screen and doing absolutely zilch! I had a bit of a breather from all this newfound information and now feel ready to start reading your reports and watching your tutorial videos. I have watched three of the tutorials so far and I just want to thank you both for making it such a pleasant experience. You are very easy to understand, down to earth and don’t bombard us with technical words that make us hit that brickwall again. Thank you both once again and heres to all us new bloggers out there.

Gideon, the brainstorming process was very helpful. I do have a question about choosing my blog topic. I love college football and am passionate about my university football & basket programs. Should I choose college football as a blog topic or can I narrow it down to my college football program? I noticed in one of Yaro’s newsletters, he said his friend Alborz chose cars, which is very broad. So, I wanted to know how broad or narrow the topic could be if I chose college football. Thank you for your help. This is a great site. It’s so focused and very systematic, which is what I need.

Gideon Shalwick Reply:

Hey RebeccaH

I reckon College Football will be a wide enough niche to give you some good traction. You can always narrow down as you go.

Just using your own college football program as a niche may be too limited - depending of course on what exactly you are planning.

But I suggest you just get started, see what kind of feedback you get from people, and then hone in further and further as you go along.

All the best!

Carol December 26, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Video is great, but the sign up button for the Roadmap To Become A Blogger isn’t there. The words about social media are cut in half. Looks like there should be a scroll bar that isn’t there.

IThis is the most well done video series that I have seen yet, even beating ones that I have paid for. Explanations are very clear and to the point and every step is very well laid out so that you aren’t suddenly surprised by a new screen that you have no idea how it got there. Tremendous fellows.
