How To Unzip Files

During the last few months, we’ve had an amazing response to the free becomeablogger.com videos.

One of the questions we often had people asking, was how to unzip files onto their computers.

The problem was that, during the videos, I would right click on the zip files, and then the “unzip here” option would automatically come up for me. But for many people, this would not be the case.

That’s why, I’ve now created this video, showing you an alternative method for unzipping your zip files.

Enjoy!

Ive been using 7zip for a number of years now, and for a nice lightweight free utility, it never dissapoints me.

I agree to Giedon. There are many people who are not aware about how to unzip file. Its not the new case and even its not the matter of laughing or making fun. There are many people who never came across zip files so they don’t know how to unzip them. And I personally feel that its absolutely fine.
By the way thanks for the video. I appreciate you took the step to show people how simple is to unzip the file..

Hi Cygnet

Great! At the beginning, it took me a while to get me head around the whole zip idea. So, I can understand what it feels like to be in that situation.

All the best!

I have a mac and none of this is helpful to me. Most of the time, all of your steps are 3 to 1. I only need to do 1. I am still not sure about unzipping things on a mac as I have never had to in the 2 years since I switched from the PC

Hi Dani

The “How To Unzip Files” video is for PC users. In fact, all the videos on Become A Blogger are for PC users.

In most cases, the processes are very similar. Although for unzipping files, it’s different, depending on which operating system you are on.

I normally only have to double click to unzip a file on my mac, but you may need to read the user documentation of your computer’s operating system if this does not work for you.

All the best!

Hey Aru

If you’re on Vista you should just be able to right click on the zip file and select the option to unzip it.

I use Vista in my videos, so it should be the same for you if you are also on Vista - in other words, if you are on Vista, you should not need the CamUnzip program.

If you’re still getting stuck, you may need to ask someone close to you who can show you how to unzip files.

All the best!

cant open zip files, Succesfully downloaded Camzip and when I downlaoded 2.6.3 wordpress and try to open it I get an error message that this is a first disk in a back-up, please insert the last disk of the set.. I cant figure out what it means. Have errased it from my sytem and re-downloaded it several times, and the same result.. This sucks for I have Vista and invested in this step by step totorial ( hosting/ domain ect and cant get pass this.)

Hi Hilda

If you’re on Vista, you should not need the Camzip software - I’ve recorded all my videos using Vista, so your interface should look very similar.

What options do you get when you right click on the zip file Hilda?

If this step is too tricky for you, you may need someone close to you who knows a little bit more about computers to show you how to unzip files.

All the best!

I just messed around online, I did a google search “how to unzip files for windows vista,” and 7zip.com is 100% free, and works excellent. Stay away from winzip.com, they make you jump through hoops, and even when it was downloaded, i kept trying to click “use evaluation” trial, which is their free trial version, and it kept kicking me out. Nonetheless, 7zip unzipped WordPress.org in the same manner that was shown on Gideon’s video clip.

So, to all the Windows Vista users, 7zip.com to unzip Wordpress.org files

Best regards,

Stacy

I’m concerned with the April comment as well with Vista user you should have been more clear as to who can follow your steps as well. My Vista no longer opens up a extraction link anymore for zip files It did the first two times I tried to open the wordpress after downloading it, then it stopped giving me the option for extraction then downloaded the wordpress as a epage…or a file ?? I had to download camzip, and now this still doesn’t function.. please assist with getting theses features back or with getting zipcam to funtion in Vista??

Hi Hilda

Sorry about all the frustration that you’re going through. I’ve certainly tried to be as clear as I can with all my videos. It’s pretty hard to cater for ALL the operating systems in the world. I’ve decided to use Vista for these videos, so I don’t really understand why you got stuck.

So does Camzip not work for you at all?

If not, you may need to uninstall it and then try unzipping files by just right clicking on it.

As I said in my previous reply, you may need help from someone else who is quite capable with computers.

All the best Hilda!

I agree with Hilda.

I went through the exact same experience as her - Vista gives a 60-day free trial period, then after that they try to force you to purchase their product to unzip files. I tried to downloand CamUnzip, and faced the exact same problems that Hilda went through. Vista just doesn’t want to unzip files, maybe I need to do a google search “How to unzip files using Vista for free”, but I’m also going to try and download WinRar and 7zip, as the above mentioned commentators mentioned it.

We shall see…

Gideon, I think that for most people we don’t have someone “close to us” that we can turn to in the event we need assistance with this, I know I don’t. I can’t pick up the phone and dial up anyone who’s computer saavy, most of my friends use the computer for basic things - email, facebook, social interaction, watching t.v., etc.

Anyways, I really appreciate your blog, it’s very informative. I found a better web hosting site than the one that you featured in the videos, it’s http://www.justhost.com, and they offer you a FREE domain name for unlimited use, they don’t charge you, and $4.95/mo for web hosting, way cheaper than having to pay for a domain name for $9/month.

All the best to you, too, Gideon! Keep up the good work :-)

Hey Stacy

I have not used JustHost yet, so I can’t comment on how appropriate they are.

Just always make sure that you actually own everything you are paying for. For example your domain name - make sure that it’s “yours”.
