080 How To Make Money With Your Blog Doing What You Are Already Doing

Your blog is not a business!

I know, it’s very disappointing isn’t it? All this talk about making money blogging and I’m gonna start out this post by saying something like that.

It’s true though. Your blog is not a business, but it’s a platform around which you can build a MASSIVE business. Yeah, I know – That sounds much better than that first line.

So when I got two questions on the hotline a few days apart about making money, I decided to devote this entire episode to talking about that.

The Questions

Alex called in to ask about all the different ways you can make money with your blog. So, I answered his question first.

Then Rochelle, from Simply Natural Ideas called in to ask about how she could take a presentation that she’s already doing and turn it into a product. So, I spend the rest of the episode talking about how to make money with your blog with what you are already doing.

This is something that I did with my Biology blog. I took the content that was freely available on my blog and converted it into a paid product. Since then, I’ve sold over 400 copies.

How do you do that? Listen to this episode and you’ll understand.

Btw, if you have any questions you’d like me to answer on the show, don’t hesitate to call the hotline at (888) 835 – 2414.

    Thanks Leslie.
That was great. I really like your advice about re-purposing your content. I’ve heard you talk about it before in a different context, and I think it’s an excellent idea. It falls into the category of ‘working smart’ instead of ‘working hard’ :-)
I’ll definitely be looking at ways I can incorporate that on my blog in the next few months.

      Great to hear Rory,

Yep. You don’t ALWAYS have to come up with something new, and if you plan accordingly, you can get more bang for your buck. Like you said – working smart instead of working hard. Or, the way I look at it is – Working smart WHILE working hard ;)

All the best as you plan out what you’re doing on your blog!

I like what you said in the beginning. “Blogging is a platform to offer your services.” This is an important point to grasp particularly for beginners. We all want to make money very fast and miss out on the “heart” or “key” to the whole equation. Thanks for this valuable information.

Thanks for the feedback Joyce. Yep, your blog is indeed a platform, and as you grow it, you can accomplish awesome things (and even make some money)
      :)

    Hi Leslie,
Great pot cast, man and a lot of useful ideas. I’m definitely going to implement one of those.
It’s good that somebody like you lays out the road map for beginning bloggers. Again, in my own feeling, I first need to write a few more posts. It also gives me a good feeling when I finished writing about a specific topic which has more than one part. Well done, Hans

OH SHOOT! Didn’t realize it was that much. I was looking at the upgrade pricing I guess. It’s strange, when I go and click buy now, it shows me $99, but then it seems that it’s the upgrade price, not the full price. That’s pretty darn expensive!

THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION!!!! Since listening to your podcast, I contacted the people who are hosting the workshop and yes they will have a PA system.. BUT they informed me that there will not be anyone there to operate it. Soooo… I’m kinda wondering if I should try to get someone there who can run it, or if i should just find a way to walk with my own stuff… Hmmmm.

SO AMAZING with the content in this podcast cause I am totally on a roll now in preparing to have a product both Before AND after this speaking engagement. Basically if I can get a recording of the workshop it’s going to be a free bonus that I can add to make the existing product that I’m about to create even more valuable. That’s what i’m thinking. Cause I actually wanna have something to offer – support wise- to the people at the workshop, so i realized that I can’t wait till the workshop is done to create it, you know?

I’m leaving two comments… sorry. So actually I’m thinking… if they are gonna have a PA system and they can get it turned on even though they don’t have someone to do a recording… my laptop should pic up the sound from the audio pretty OK if I’m going over the PA right? Hmmmm :) …. I’ll be dreaming about solutions as I sleep tonight. Time to go to bed ;)

The quality won’t be great just with the laptop mic, but if you are using a P.A. at least the sound shouldn’t be affected by you moving around, as long as you have the mic with you.

My recommendation would be to find someone who knows about sound and have them check it out for you beforehand. That can save you a lot of headache.

Love the way you explain how blogging isn’t a business- but a platform…where you can build a business. Very clever. What about mobile ad networks? I heard since a lot of internet users have been making the shift from computers to mobile devices companies like Mobicow.com make unique tab ads for cell phones and they offer us bloggers 60% of net revenue! Any more tips for mobile?? Thanks so much!

Glad to hear you are enjoying the podcast.

To answer your question, first let me say that I’ve never used any mobile ad networks, so I can’t speak from first hand experience. However, if you have a mobile app, these are a great way of monetizing them without having to charge for the app. If you can get enough people using the app regularly, you can potentially make a significant amount of money with it.
