046 Setting up a Blog Blueprint for Blogging Success

In today’s episode, I talk about something that I’m in the process of doing – setting up a Blog Blueprint for my blog.

BlueprintThe concept is very simple, if you are going to build a house, the first step in that process is to get an architect to draw up a blueprint. Without a blueprint, the carpenters will be wandering in the dark, and the end product will most likely NOT be what you are looking for.

I believe that the same thing is true when it comes to your blog. If your blog is to be something substantial, something of value, it’s a great idea to use this same principle and develop a blueprint.

This is something that I wish I did when I first started, and I would encourage you to do.

    hey leslie , thanks for this information .. i never thought about adding a blueprint to a blog i always thought that you just set up a blog and start writing . However by adding various different links to certain articles in your blog is very useful for the user … thanks again .. Have a safe trip … oh yeah sorry about your grandmother

      Hi Eddie,

      First off, thanks for your comment. I really do appreciate it. The trip has been very safe so far, and all is well.

      I actually never thought about having a blog blueprint before either. I always thought that you should just keep writing, with or without a plan. Now, I know a lot of successful bloggers who don’t have any blueprint whatsoever. So it definitely isn’t necessary. However, I do believe that doing so could allow you to provide even more value, and that’s why I’m going through that process now.

    Hi Leslie, what a great episode. This is what I was looking for: a blueprint for my blog! I need a structure for my items, but I couldn’t find the way to do it. Now I know how to start and make a guideline. That will make it much easier to get into the(right)flow of blogging.

    But I also have a question: when should I use categories and when tags. Until now I only use tags. But can I keep on using them when I also start using categories?

    Thanks for all your big help with building my blog. Using your 7 Day Bootcamp and all of the podcast episodes helped me so much.

      To answer your question – I would ALWAYS use categories. I think they are very important, because they serve as an organizational structure for your blog. They tell people what general topics they can find on your blog. My advice is to decide on the broad topics that you are covering and then make categories for those topics. Then, if someone wants to find all your content on a particular general topic, they can go to your categories. I WISH someone told me that when I first started.

      In terms of tags, I would look at those as keywords that you decide on based on the content of each blog post. Those can be as specific as you would like them to be, and you can use multiple keywords for each article. It doesn’t distract from the general categories, but they are specific to the blog posts.

      As a concrete example, the category I put this episode in was “Blogging”. However, the keywords I used are “blog structure, blogging blueprint, Organization, strategy”. Hope that helps!

      Hi Leslie, thank you for your answer. It helps a lot! I will think about my categories and tags and implement them on my blog. And I will also make a blueprint for my blog and hope that I can commit myself to that blog more frequently.

    Do you need to set a balance on how accessible your content is? I heard an interview on blogcastfm where the advice was to add killer content to your site for free, but to allow this content to disappear into the archives of your site. (The interviewer also suggested removing any search fields on your site) This information would then be used for producing your own product/ebook. What are your thoughts?

      That all depends on the model you are using. It all boils down to finding what works for you. The way I like to do it is to give A LOT of value away for free. I don’t care about letting my content disappear into the archives. I want people to be able to get my BEST content easily. That way, they learn to trust you as an “expert friend”. When it comes down to it, they will buy from you, because they trust you. Yes, there are successful people who hold stuff back. I say be generous with your content. It’ll come back to you. I’ve seen many people do it that way, and it works! That’s the way I’m doing it, and it’s working for me the way I want it to.

    Thanks for the great ideas. I have recently noticed the same, while setting up my autoresponder series and looking for relevant blog posts to link to, that I haven’t properly cover all the topics I should on my blog. Or not to the level and quality that I have now set myself (the bar keeps rising!).

    Putting a blog blueprint in place is a professional way to organise your thoughts and content. It’s high up on my To Do list now. Thanks again.
