Who: Cynthia Sanchez
How To Use Pinterest To Grow Your Blog - With Cynthia SanchezBlog: Oh So Pinteresting
Podcast: The Oh So Pinteresting Podcast

Man, I remember it as if it were yesterday. I found out about this new social network that was quickly on the rise. I went to my wife to show her it because it seemed like something she would like.

And her response was something like - "Oh Pinterest? I LOVE Pinterest!

WHAT? My wife knew about a social network before I did? What was this world coming to? I'm the "Online Guy". I tell her about social networks and she takes a while to come on board.

Our relationship was entering a new, weird space. Ok, maybe it wasn't that big of a deal, but you get the point.

Pinterest is a very fascinating phenomena. As one of the FASTEST GROWING social networks, it's a serious force to be reckoned with. It's so serious that I've found myself curious as to how to best use Pinterest to expand what I'm doing here at Become A Blogger.

So, if their somethings strange, in the Pinterest hood. Who you gonna call? CYNTHIA SANCHEZ (modified ghost busters theme song - p.s. if you knew what this was, that's an indication that you're getting old).

Since I first time I met Cynthia at Blog World in New York, there was one thing that was GLARINGLY obvious - Cynthia Loves (and knows) Pinterest. From her blog, Oh So Pinteresting, she shares that passion with the world, educating people on how to effectively use Pinterest.

In this interview, Cynthia talks about:

  • How she got into this whole Pinterest thing
  • Making the tough decision to leave her stable job as an Oncology nurse to focus on her online business
  • The Challenges she faced while building her blog
  • How Blogging lead to some AWESOME Opportunities
  • What Bloggers need to do to be AWESOME on Pinterest (Step By Step)
  • How to grow a following on Pinterest
  • How to Make Money With Pinterest

So, if you've heard of this Pinterest thing and want to know how YOU can best use it for your blog, business, or whatever else you're into, make sure to check out this interview. You're gonna love it.

awesome podcast that I really can +1 and vouch for. Pinterest is my number 1 traffic source by far. The key is making your pictures pinnable, as Cynthia said. Even if I'm not posting a recipe and it's more of an article, I'm still sure to leave a pretty picture that will catch the eye. (here is an example of a picture + title i created to be sure I had a pinnable image - promise I'm not trying to promote.. just trying to show an example)
    http://happyfoodhealthylife.com/2013/02/20/how-yoga-has-helped-me-love-my-body/
Also.. if you are curious to know what all has been pinned from your site, type in http://www.pinterest.com/source/sitename... for example http://pinterest.com/source/becomeablogger.com/ - Leslie, you'd be surprised to see how much of BAB has already been pinned!
And Cynthia is right when it comes to naming your images as you want them to show on pinterest. And I'm always sure to add my blog name to the title as well... that way, people get used to seeing Happy Food Healthy Life pop up on Pinterest.
Anyway.... great post. LOVE and utilize pinterest a LOT (obviously)

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

Oh wow Holly, thanks for sharing that link on seeing what has been pinned. Yes, I was surprised indeed to see how much of my stuff was already pinned. Now to make more pinnable pics.

Great to hear that Pinterest is also a good source of traffic for you. It's always good to see it working in different niches :)

      Oh, and YOU ROCK!

      • http://www.inspiredanyway.com jennie

That's a great tip about seeing what has been pinned from your site. I didn't know you could do that, so thanks for sharing!

I also love Pinterest. I did want to mention that in my experience, it is the image *alt text* that will show up as the default Pinterest description, not the image name/title which I believe is what Cynthia said on the show. Great interview, though. Lots of good info, as usual.

        • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

          Hi Jennie,

I think it actually depends on which plugin you use. It seems that various plugins pin things in different ways. Not sure that I've figured it all out myself, but I think that doing it the way Cynthia suggests also helps for the search engines.

  • http://thefrazzledhomemaker.com/ Cathy

Oh Wow! This was an awesome broadcast! I have been using Pinterest for personal use almost since it started and want to start using it for my business. Cynthia answered a lot of questions I had (and some I didn't know I had too).

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

Glad it was so informative for you. It definitely did answer some of my own questions. Cynthia knows her stuff.

  • Francine

I find Pinterest to be addictive but I have no idea what it is all about other than beautiful pictures. I am just beginning to understand that the pictures are from websites (I think) that belong to entrepreneurs (I can never spell that word right). I am on a fixed income and would like to increase my income by becoming a blogger. At 67 years old, there are so many topics that I could blog about that topics are no problem. But, I do want the blogs to be socially uplifting and increase quality of like of those participating. I just do not quite understand the concept of Pinterest and I really want to.

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

      Hi Francine,

Did you listen to this podcast episode? Cynthia does a pretty good job at explaining how Pinterest can be used to grow your blog and even to make some money. You should definitely give it a listen.

I like the sound of what you said you want your blog to be - socially uplifting and increasing quality of life for those participating. That's the best kind of blog in my opinion.

  • http://daveproinfo.com Dave Prothro

Enjoyed the podcast. I will check into Pinterest a little closer.

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

      Thanks. Glad you enjoyed!

  • Rick Resch

    Hey Leslie,
I like the new format because it is purpose-driven and you get to the pith of the subject. Time is at a premium because I follow more than one blogger and I receive more than one email so I like the podcasts, videos, posts to be direct because I can't waste time.
I like things short and sweet.
Thank you for this podcast with Cynthia Sanchez.
Take care and I wish you the best.

    Cheers,
    Rick

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

Thanks for the feedback Rick. That's exactly what I was going for. I'm trying to keep my podcast episodes to 30 minutes, so the preinterview really helped to narrow things down.

  • http://www.mybloggingstore.com Muhammad Reaz

  • http://jasondmulholland.com Jason Mulholland

    Hey Leslie,

Love the podcasts, and tuned in to this one today while driving. I'm on Pinterest, but not active, so wasn't sure what to expect...

Pleasantly surprised, and makes me want to get active on it! I'm here to leave another tip - I just read on SME that you can also pin videos. Is that true??? If so, how cool, and yet another way to stand out from all the other pictures. Here's that post: http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-to-generate-leads-with-video-marketing/

Keep up all the good work and interviews!

    Jason

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

Yep, great tip Jason. I have seen a number of videos pinned to pinterest. I must say that Pinterest is a very interesting social network and I'm getting more and more interested in what's happening there.

Glad you're enjoying the interviews. We've got many more coming :)

  • http://www.mikeorthsblog.com Mike Orth

    Leslie,

I found the interview with Cynthia very easy to follow, the flow was great, and you took us through the story with each section building upon the previous section.

    Great work,

    Mike Orth

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

Thanks for the feedback Mike. I really thought that it flowed well too. Doing the preinterview really allowed us to pull out the most valuable points.

  • http://www.imstrategus.com Mikhail

I use pinterest marketing for one of my niche blogs and it works really well. The main reason is mostly because of the niche. Women 25-35 and there lots of pictures on that blog, so I can just pin it anytime.

Sometime my pins go viral and it brings 300-500 visitors within an hour.

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

That's awesome to hear Mikhail. Yes, I'm seeing more and more people using Pinterest and getting lots of traffic. Very encouraging!

  • Monty Campbell

I'm excited to see you working with Cynthia Sanchez. She really has a handle on Pinterest. I'm starting to appreciate its impact on my social media efforts.

Thanks for reminding me to reach out to her after this post.

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

Yep, she knows her stuff, and Pinterest is becoming a significant source of traffic for more and more people. I'm going to be trying to focus more on it in the future.

  • http://www.fitdeskjockey.com Matt

    Wonderful episode Leslie!

They say that men are more visual than women, yet women were the first to embrace Pinterest, a VERY visual form of social media. Interesting... :)

You can sure tell you're a teacher Leslie, I always leave your podcast episodes with homework. :) I've got 7 new things on my "to do" list now. Most notably I just realized I've never had a "pin it" button on my site, so shame on me for that. I'll be correcting that right away.

Thank you for sharing your story and so much awesome information Cynthia.

    Best wishes,

    -Matt

    • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

Glad to hear that you got value from the interview Matt. Now get on those 7 new things ;)

      • http://fitdeskjockey.com Matt

        Hey Leslie and friends,

I've already crossed off a few items on the list, but for some reason whenever I try to convert my account to a business account it just takes me back to my main page. Also, if I click on the "verify website" button I get a 502 error.

Any idea if this is a common error with the site, or is the error all mine?

        Thanks in advance.

        -Matt

        • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

I knew you would. Always taking action - awesome stuff.

In terms of the problem you're getting, I'm not 100% sure. If it was giving you that error on pinterest, it could've been a temporary glitch. If it was not getting the url from your server, it's possible that you uploaded it to the wrong location. Did you do it inside the public_html folder? That would be the correct place.

          • http://fitdeskjockey.com Matt

Ha ha. You know it. :)

I actually never even got that far. I entered my websites URL in "settings" and then when I clicked on the "verify website" button (which I assume would provide the html code) it just brings me to a page that says "Our server is experiencing a mild case of the hiccups. We've reported it to the team."

            I think I killed Pinterest....

            • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

LOL. I knew you'd be the one to kill it ;)

They are actually in the middle of upgrading to a new look, so they might be experiencing some technical issues. I would just wait a little and then try again.

              Here's Cynthia's review of the new look - http://www.ohsopinteresting.com/review-of-the-new-look-for-pinterest/

              • http://fitdeskjockey.com Matt

You are correct sir! I just tried today when I got home from work and all systems are go.

                Thank you much!

                -Matt

                • http://www.becomeablogger.com Leslie Samuel

Awesome. Glad you got it taken care of!
